Abstract Direct numerical simulations (DNS) are performed of a cantilevered stator blade to identify the unsteady and turbulent flow structure within compressor tip flows. The were with clearances 1.6% 3.2% chord. results show that both gap at exit on suction side highly phenomena controlled by fine-scale structures. signature classical tip-leakage vortex is consequence time-averaging does not exist in true flow. Despite complexity, we able replicate using validated quasi-three-dimensional (Q3D) model. This enables wide range Q3D DNS study effects corner radius Reynolds number. Tip found radically alter tip; it affects separation bubble size shape, as well transition mechanisms These can lead variations mass up 10% factor 2 variation dissipation gap.
